What is Health?
As I’ve matured I’ve begun to understand the holistic nature of health. While everyone may understand the concept differently this is what it is to me:
Health is my daily practice
Health is eating well
Health is throwing in the towel if I’m “not feeling it” after warmup
Health is my post workout protein shake
Health is a nap when I need one
Health is being kind to myself
Health is an open mind
Health is not feeling guilt with occasional indulgence of calorie dense foods
Health is maintaining my body composition
Health is time well spent with friends
Health is pushing myself through a tough practice
Health is learning through reading or listening
Health is feeling strong in my training
Health is being well rested
Health is my annual dermatologist check up
Health is a walk with my dog
Health is losing myself in a run
Health is quality time spent with my wife
Health is knowing my limits
Health is living long and well
Health is my commitment to myself and others
Objectively there are metrics that can measure health (such as blood pressure, waist circumference, resting heart rate, insulin resistance, etc), but metrics only go so far. Health is multifaceted. Spirit, body and mind. If you only take care of your one or two of these you aren’t there yet. What is health to you?
