Strength Programming for Masters Athletes
As a career strength and conditioning coach (and masters athlete), I understand the unique needs of our aged up athletes who want to get better at their craft. When it comes to improving sports performance, strategic planning, skilled coaching, and logical progression must be considered.
📈 Tailoring programs to individual goals, abilities, and areas for improvement is key. From honing in on sport-specific movements to addressing mobility and recovery, every aspect must be carefully considered to maximize a client’s potential. Through focused training, consistency, and hard work master’s athletes can achieve milestones that surpass even their own expectations. Here’s my list of key considerations:
1️⃣ Individualized Assessment: Your journey should begin with a comprehensive evaluation of your strengths, weaknesses, and performance goals. Understanding your unique needs allows your coach to tailor a program that hones in on areas for improvement while capitalizing on your existing abilities.
2️⃣ Expert Coaching: Having a knowledgeable coach that understands the challenges of a master’s athlete is your first step. They should understand your history and susceptibility to injury, experience level and time allotment for training (due of work or family commitments). They should be able to provide you with the best exercise options to meet your ability level and hold you accountable to execute safe and proficient technique.
3️⃣ Strategic Progression: Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is athleticism. Your program should be carefully structured to ensure steady progress, with each training phase building upon the last in a logical and sustainable manner.
It’s obvious that I’m a huge proponent of strength training for masters athletes and it’s no secret why. Participating in physical activities that will increase your lean body mass and improve your cardiovascular output will not only improve the length of your life but also the QUALITY?
