Train with Friends

Training (running, strength training & swimming) is most often the time I get to spend with me; it’s my destress, decompress, refocus & recharge time. I do appreciate the solidarity of training alone but I also LOVE the community aspect of training / competing with a group or team.

If you are only training by yourself you are missing out. There are amazing people out there just like you or completely different than you that can make training tolerable, enjoyable, or just a blast. There’s nothing quite like discussing your most embarrassing training or racing experiences with a colleague that gets it. Your biggest fails are the bonds that bring others together.

I’ve often found that there are people unwilling to run alongside me as they anticipate that they will be slowing me down or they’d be uncomfortable running at my pace. While I could possibly run faster there is merit for running at conversation pace (see my last post on running easier). Regardless of your ability these discussions can level the playing field and make us all feel equal. Being a faster runner doesn’t make you better than a slower runner after all.

Training can bring people together if we let it. If you haven’t tried training with a group before, I highly encourage it. Our local fitness community is strong and I’m glad to be a part of it.
